Goal
The Detroit Steps in San Francisco’s Sunnyside neighborhood had long been overlooked—a 185-step public stairway connecting two blocks across Monterey Boulevard, filled with untapped potential. Working with the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association (SNA) and local residents, our goal was simple: help transform this neglected right-of-way into a vibrant, community-loved public space that reflects the neighborhood’s energy and needs.
Process
As the project’s landscape architect, BLOCS joined a community-led steering committee that had already done the hard work of organizing, dreaming, and building local momentum. We listened closely to their goals: create a space that felt safer, more inviting, and reflective of the Sunnyside spirit.
Our team developed a phased landscape design strategy that supports long-term stewardship and flexible implementation. We focused on planting design that frames views and enhances walkability, durable materials that are easy to maintain, and moments of pause along the steep vertical climb—small seating areas, future art opportunities, and layered greenery that evolves over time. We worked hand-in-hand with residents through workshops and walk-throughs, adjusting the design to reflect community feedback and priorities every step of the way.
Results
This is a landscape that belongs to the people who use it. The first phases of planting and path upgrades have already sparked renewed energy, with neighbors gathering, volunteering, and celebrating their shared success. The Detroit Steps is becoming what it was always meant to be: a local landmark for connection, movement, and neighborhood pride.
