Goal

Wellington College’s first U.S. campus, located in the heart of San Francisco’s Design District, needed more than just a renovation. The goal was to transform an underused parking lot into a vibrant, immersive landscape that supports a global education mission and fosters curiosity, creativity, and connection for young learners.

Process

Working closely with the client and project team, we reimagined the entire site to flow seamlessly from indoors to out. With limited space, we prioritized design moves that deliver impact: hillside play berms, sensory learning gardens, outdoor classrooms, murals, sand and mud play, and shaded spaces for exploration. Every detail was designed with intention, tying into the Bay Area’s spirit of innovation, energy, and equity.

Results

The result is a joyful, high-functioning play and learning landscape that supports the school’s mission of shaping global citizens. It’s a place where imagination takes root and education expands beyond the classroom. The playyard is proof that even small spaces can deliver big outcomes.
