Goals

The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association came to BLOCS with a clear vision: to transform the stretch of Monterey Avenue into a unified, people-friendly district that draws in foot traffic, supports local businesses, and builds a stronger neighborhood identity. The initial focus was on high-impact, small-footprint improvements — particularly at key corners where people wait for the bus, grab lunch from a food truck, or gather casually with neighbors.

Process

As landscape architects and community engagement leads, BLOCS partnered with local stakeholders to co-create a replicable streetscape kit — one that could be scaled block by block as funding allowed. We specified bold powder-coated benches and planters in a blue that would stand out in the neighborhood, and introduced a simple paving strategy that could be applied cost-effectively to existing conditions. By focusing on modular, low-cost interventions, we made it easier to move from idea to installation. BLOCS also supported the Association in securing City grant funding to bring the first pilot corners to life.

Results

Since the first installations in early 2024, the corners have become lively, well-loved spots — used daily by longtime residents and first-time visitors alike. The bright benches and planters now act as visual anchors and informal gathering spaces along the corridor. With a second phase installed in 2025 and more planned as funding becomes available, Monterey Avenue is steadily becoming a vibrant public realm — one corner at a time. This project shows how small moves in landscape architecture can spark lasting change, and how community identity can be built from the ground up.
